NALP STATEMENT ON THE PARDON OF JOE ARPAIO
August 25, 2017
We are truly disgusted at the Trump administration’s pardoning of Joe Arpaio, a man who has played a vicious and hateful role in Arizona. Arpaio’s racist policies and practices embody the very worst of America — oppressive and vindictive. His loss at the polls in November 2016 was a referendum by the people of his state. That should have been the last word.
Instead, by pardoning Arpaio, Trump is declaring open season on immigrants, suggesting that other law enforcement officials can engage in similar behavior without consequence. We thoroughly condemn the pardon and the message it sends.
