As of this moment, thousands of domestic terrorists, some carrying guns and other weapons, have stormed Washington, DC, taking over the United States Capitol in an effort to stop the democratic process.

In response to the situation, New American Leaders and New American Leaders Action Fund Interim President Sara Le Brusq issued the following statement:

“What’s happening right now would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. But four years of Trump and his administration’s white nationalist crusade has eroded our democracy, strengthened systemic white supremacy, and incited the hate that fueled today’s attack.

“There is no question that today’s actions were directly caused by Trump, his administration and the elected officials standing in silence or openly supporting his lies about the validity of the 2020 election. They stoked the fear and hate that emboldened these extremists, allowing them to commit acts of domestic terrorism; taking over the United States Capitol building and state capitol buildings across the country.

“Their actions had one goal: To stop the peaceful transition of power and support Trump in his efforts to overthrow our democratic system. Yet despite their blatant disregard for human life and the democratic process, law enforcement allowed them to continue their rioting. Had these protestors been people of color, they would have immediately been subjected to brutal force and even killed.

“We now stand at a national moment of reckoning. Today’s attack has laid bare the hard truth that our democracy is a fragile thing. As New Americans, we’ve known this truth for generations as we’ve faced discrimination, hate and suspicion in our chosen country. But despite everything, we are committed to fighting to strengthen it. We call on all who are horrified by today’s actions to join us in healing our country and ending the deep-seated systemic white supremacy, anti-Blackness, xenophobia and hate that Trump preyed on to lead to this moment.”
