Following the Trump administration’s announcement on the public charge rule, Sayu Bhojwani, president and founder of New American Leaders, released the following statement:
“Instead of addressing our broken immigration system, Trump and his administration have decided to further their white nationalist agenda by blatantly targeting the most vulnerable immigrants. This change is yet another example of what happens when you have white supremacists like Trump and Stephen Miller creating immigration policies.
“Regardless of the hateful messaging spewing out of the White House, immigrants have every right to receive food stamps, public housing, and other social services without penalty. But by changing the public charge rule, Trump and his administration would rather put people at risk of hunger and homelessness than honor our country’s commitment to welcome all who choose to make the United States home, regardless of their economic standing.
“As a network of New Americans and people of color, we are outraged at this administration’s continued cruelty and criminalization of our communities. We stand with those fighting this administration in court on this decision. The New American Majority holds the key to victory in 2020 and we refuse to allow racist attacks like this to continue.”
