As one of the 35 naturalized citizens included in the Carnegie Corporation’s 2023 Great Americans list, Ghida Dagher, president and CEO of New American Leaders, issued the following statement:

“As a refugee, my immigrant experience has shaped my identity as a leader and as a New American. To have these experiences and identities celebrated as a member of the 2023 Great Immigrants, Great Americans cohort is an immense honor.”

Since 2006, the Carnegie Corporation has recognized immigrants in the United States whose work strengthens our country, communities, and democracy through the Great Immigrants, Great Americans initiative. The 2023 Class of Great Immigrants is composed of naturalized citizens from 33 countries and a wide range of backgrounds and fields.

“The American experience is intrinsically tied to the immigrant experience. We are the backbone of our nation and are committed to not only pursuing our own American Dreams, but working to secure a brighter future for those that come after us.

“We know that New Americans are the leaders our communities—and our country—have been waiting for. And as the president and CEO of New American Leaders, I am committed to empowering the next generation of immigrants as they share their stories and own their potential as they run, win, and lead in our democracy.”

Founded in 2011, New American Leaders is the only national, nonpartisan organization focused on bringing immigrants and their allies into the political process. Dagher has served as the president and CEO of New American Leaders since 2021 and is both a trainer for and alum of the Ready to Lead™ program. Having led multiple political campaigns, launched policy initiatives at nonprofits, and served in Michigan Governor Whitmer’s Executive Office as Director of Appointments, she has dedicated her career to creating opportunity for and building leadership in BIPOC and New Americans communities.

“By owning our authentic identities as immigrants, New Americans, and leaders, we have the privilege to continue not only the Carnegie legacy but the legacy of all immigrants who came before; paving the way for others to follow in our footsteps and create a country that respects and reflects the richness of our identities.

“I am beyond grateful to be included as a Great American and offer my heartfelt congratulations to my fellow awardees on this incredible recognition.”
