Headquartered in New York, NAL is a national, nonprofit organization with programs across the country. Position Description
NAL/AF is seeking a dedicated and highly motivated Director of Development who can set the direction and ensure longevity of our organization as well as develop and implement an ambitious revenue strategy and bring the story of NAL/AFâs value and impact to life for existing and prospective stakeholders. The successful candidate will be analytical and creative, collaborate well with a passionate and fun staff, and coordinate and manage multiple projects. The ideal candidate will have 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) fundraising experience as well as experience in immigrant, leadership, civic engagement, democracy organizations, and/or political campaigns. They thrive in a small team environment and should be comfortable developing systems and processes, excited about bringing big ideas to the table, and an outstanding communicator. Above all, candidates should be passionate about advocating for underrepresented communitiesâ and be invested in NALâs mission to equip immigrants and refugees for civic leadership.Â
The Director of Development will lead all fundraising efforts, including creating and executing long-term plans to support the organizational growth of our 501(c)3 and 501(c)4. They will also provide strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, evaluation, integration, and administration of the development division. As a member of the Senior Staff, the Director of Development advises the CEO/President, Chief Operating Officer, and the Board of Directors on fundraising goals, cultivates external relationships to engage donors, expands the organizationâs visibility, and ensures compliance with grant requirements and reporting.
Responsibilities
Strategy and Execution (50%)
- Develop and execute a multi-year fundraising plan that generates revenue at both the national level and for NAL/AFâs priority states.
- Work closely with the Executive and Development team to establish fundraising goals, set strategic priorities, and develop and meet budget. Create an annual department budget and plan overall revenue for the organization.
- Continuously evaluate and innovate fundraising strategies and tactics and lead strategic initiatives.
- Develop multi-year revenue plans and forecasts.Â
- Cement NAL/AFâs case for support understanding our unique selling proposition and space in the broader ecosystem.Â
- Orient and engage Board members on the development strategy and steward them to be active fundraisers/meet fundraising goals.
- Participate in the Senior Staff team and contribute to overall organization planning and strategy.
- Collaborate with the Finance Team to complete grant budgets and reports, track revenue progress, and ensure consistency between grant budgets, program requirements, and resource allocation.
- Track proposal and reporting deadlines, ensure that all submitted materials are accurate and comply with any funder requirements.Â
- Co-develop and manage the organizationâs impact communication efforts, including the annual report.
- Work with the Communications, Political, and Program Teams on enhanced data management, messaging, and metrics that strengthen fundraising and align messaging and goals across the organization.Â
Donor Recruitment and Management (40%)
- Identify, cultivate, and manage relationships with current and prospective individual donors, donor advisors, corporate supporters, and foundations from various geographies and sectors.
- Work closely with the CEO/President to cultivate prospects with the capacity for high-level gifts and steward donors to ensure continued giving.
- Supervise one team member and nurture their professional development. Oversee the teamâs efforts, including implementation of digital fundraising campaigns, individual giving efforts, and donor cultivation events.
- Update our audience and funders and ensure all proposals, reports, and donor communications happen in a timely manner.
- Plan and execute fundraising events and gatherings for donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
- Manage and collaborate with fundraising contractors and consultants to connect with donors and generate development materials.
Other (10%)
- Cultivate an organizational culture of philanthropy and empower all staff to envision themselves as fundraisers.
- Contribute to efforts to raise NAL/AFâs national profile through branding efforts, website features and improvements, and storybanking.
Qualifications & SkillsÂ
- Alignment with NAL/AFâs mission and values, and a commitment to serving immigrant communities, and building a multiracial democracy. Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity to the needs of immigrants, refugees and undocumented and under-documented communities.
- 7+ years fundraising experience, preferably someone who has pre-existing relationships with foundations.
- Experience managing a team.
- Stellar relationship management, communication, interpersonal skills, and written abilities.
- Ability to convey the organizational message and inspire donors to invest.
- Critical thinker, strategic planner, analytical, and meticulously detail-oriented.
- Commitment to organizationâs mission and understanding of current policy issues and political landscape.Â
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as within a collaborative environment, and with diverse internal and external partners.
- Flexibility and the ability to prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.
- Experience managing and tracking budgets.

Salary and Benefits
NAL/AF offers a competitive salary, benefits, and leave policies. Position Description:
The Deputy Director of Leadership Programs will play a pivotal role in advancing New American Leaders’ mission to recruit and train first and second-generation Americans from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds to run for public office, seek government appointments, and work on political campaigns, with a specific focus on women. This role supports the National Director of Leadership Programs and the broader Leadership Programs team with project management, accountability, and organizational efficiency. The Deputy Director will also lead specific initiatives, including a portfolio of leadership programs, national alumni engagement, and pre-candidate coaching programs, to be determined based on the strengths and interests of the hire.
While this position does not initially include direct management responsibilities, it may evolve to supervise staff or consultants as organizational needs grow. The ideal candidate is highly organized, a strong collaborator, and deeply committed to advancing an inclusive democracy.
Responsibilities:
Program Management and Oversight (65%)
- Support the National Director and Regional Program Managers in planning, executing, and evaluating leadership programs, ensuring high-quality delivery.
- Own and manage a portfolio of trainings within NALâs curriculum, such as Ready to Win, National Womenâs Training, Rising to Run for women who have run and lost, or new programming as identified.
- Lead pre-candidate coaching programs to support participants in preparing for public office.
- Assist the National Director in driving the team to meet ambitious recruitment goals, and own a portion of the recruitment goals.Â
- Collaborate with the team to maintain systems that track participant pipelines and program outcomes.
- Provide logistical and organizational support for national and regional programs, including training sessions and events.
- Support in the development of updates and reports to the Director for the CEO, Board of Directors, and others as directed
Alumni Community (15%)
- Project manage the Alumni Engagement Program with a particular focus on Regional Program Managers developing strong relationships with alumni with the goal of keeping people engaged as potential trainers or donors
- Collaborate with the Senior Program Leadership Team to develop, refine, and iterate on an in-person and virtual event strategy with the goal of driving NAL/AF participant connections and building a community across a variety of indicators, and ultimately driving community participation, engagement, and retention in the alumni community
- Support the Regional Program Managers in communicating news, resources and opportunities to training alum through social media, keeping staff informed through internal channels
Partnership Development and Relationship Management (10%)
- Cultivate relationships with a portfolio of national partners relevant to leadership development and programmatic goals, in particular organizations focused on women and specific constituencies within the larger immigrant ecosystem.
- Represent NAL at events and meetings to elevate the organizationâs profile and build strategic alliances.
- Support Regional Program Managers in identifying and fostering regional partnerships.
Team Support and Development (10%)
- Assist the Leadership Director in fostering a culture of continuous learning through skills training and professional development of the program team.
- Develop tools and processes to enhance team organization, accountability, and productivity.

Skills and Qualifications:
- Strong commitment to serving immigrant communities and fostering an inclusive democracy, with cultural sensitivity to diverse communities, including undocumented and under-documented populations.
- Experience planning, managing, and evaluating leadership development programs or similar initiatives.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and ensure attention to detail.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate relationships with partners, alumni, and stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong experience organizing events, from ideation through execution, with the ability to align events with strategic goals.
- A team player who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and works effectively across functions and remote teams.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate people to create change. Attention to detail and follow through on all elements of work.
- Minimum 2 years of management experience, including ensuring progressional growth

Preferred Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience in politics, campaigns, or organizing
- At least 2 years of management experience, including ensuring progressional growth
- Comfort with data management tools, including EveryAction and Google Sheets, as well as Asana for project management.
- Experience working with diverse communities and understanding the unique barriers faced by first- and second-generation Americans.
- Familiarity with pre-candidate coaching, political leadership development, or alumni engagement strategies.

About NAL/NALAF:
New American Leaders (NAL) and New American Leaders Action Fund (NALAF) are dedicated to building an inclusive democracy by preparing first- and second-generation immigrants and refugees to run for office, win elections, and govern with integrity. NAL/AF are the only organizations solely focused on equipping New Americans to enter the political sphere and govern responsibly. Through our programs, we empower leaders to take action at every stage of their political journeys, from gaining campaign skills to advancing their governing abilities.
The Recruitment Consultant’s objective is to strengthen NAL’s Central Valley, California program by expanding outreach to first and second generation Americans with the goal of equipping them with the tools needed to engage in civic and political life. In addition to recruiting 15 participants for one of NALâs signature training programs designed to kick-start or enhance their political journey. In addition to this, the consultant will host an event to bring these individuals together to foster connection and shared purpose. The Consultant will also focus on fostering partnerships with local civic engagement organizations and elected officials to build a network of support in the region. Knowledge of political campaigns or volunteer experience in this field is a plus. The contractor will work in alignment with NALâs values of inclusivity and equity.
Deliverables:
Work Plan: The Consultant will prepare a comprehensive proposal and work plan utilizing NALâs processes. This plan will outline how they intend to achieve the project goals including metrics, and a detailed timeline.
Central Valley Political Landscape Guide: The Consultant will update the Central Valley Political Landscape Guide to offer an overview of the current political climate, trends, issues, stakeholders, and analysis of races in 2025.
Partnership proposal: The Consultant will prepare a comprehensive proposal aimed at securing 10 partnerships with local civic engagement organizations, elected officials, and funders. This will include record-keeping with relevant contact information and a history of their interactions when acting as a NAL representative.
Partnership and contact transfer: The Consultant will ensure that all organizational, applicant, and elected official contacts related to this project are effectively documented and transferred to the appropriate NAL staff member.
Recruitment outcomes: The Consultant will achieve the goal of recruiting at least 15Â participants from the Central Valley to attend one of NALâs training programs nationwide.
Alumni networking event: The Consultant will successfully plan and execute a 25-person alumni networking event in the Central Valley, including all necessary arrangements and a detailed event program.
Event attendance: The consultant will staff the Alumni networking event.Â
Coaching: Provide recommendations of at least 10 Central Valley alumni for NAL coaching program.Â
Elected Official engagement: The Consultant will have engaged with and recruited at least 10 elected officials in NAL programming by the end of the contract.Â
Final report: At the completion of the contract, the Consultant will provide a final report detailing their work and provide recommendations for growth in the Central Valley.
Requirements:
- Attend check-in meetings and provide updates on the progress of deliverables.
- Regularly check and respond to emails and Slack messages.
- Create and maintain spreadsheets to document research and build institutional knowledge.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications:
- Campaign or organizing experience as a volunteer or staff member is preferred.
- Excellent relationship cultivation skills, facilitation skills, and the ability to relate to a diverse group of individuals or organizations. Expert interpersonal skills in dealing with principals, lawmakers, potential donors, and colleagues.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy, protocol, and a commitment to high quality work

- Ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
- Familiarity with NAL programming, either as an alum or supporter.
- Demonstrated knowledge of California state and local political landscape, with a focus on the Centrally Valley region.
