New American Leaders (NAL) is leading a movement for inclusive democracy by preparing first and second-generation Americans to use their power and potential in public office. We believe that our democracy is stronger when everyone is included, and everyone participates.
Headquartered in New York, NAL is a national, nonprofit organization with programs across the country. We have a strong track record of recruiting and training immigrants of diverse race/ethnic backgrounds to run for public office. We also work with New American elected officials across the country who are at the frontlines of creating transformative policy environments for educational, economic and political equity.

About NAL/NALAF:
New American Leaders (NAL) and New American Leaders Action Fund (NALAF) are dedicated to building an inclusive democracy by preparing first- and second-generation immigrants and refugees to run for office, win elections, and govern with integrity. NAL/AF are the only organizations solely focused on equipping New Americans to enter the political sphere and govern responsibly. Through our programs, we empower leaders to take action at every stage of their political journeys, from gaining campaign skills to advancing their governing abilities.
The Logistics and Operations Specialist, working as a contractor, will support the Department of Program Evaluation and Operations by handling administrative and logistical tasks for NAL’s programming, with additional support for NALAF. The ideal candidate will have experience in event planning, managing logistics for day-long or multi-day events, and possess strong attention to detail. Knowledge of political campaigns or volunteer experience in this field is a plus. The contractor will work in alignment with NAL’s values of inclusivity and equity.
Deliverables:
- Venue Management:
- Identify and research venues for NAL trainings, coordinate quotes, conduct site visits, and manage contracts with hotels or other event venues.
- Ensure all venues align with NAL’s values and logistical requirements, and provide a summary report on each venue researched.
- Travel Coordination:
- Book and manage travel arrangements for trainers, speakers, and participants, including flights and local transportation (e.g., Uber vouchers).
- Maintain accurate records of all travel bookings and create a report on travel logistics for each event.
- Logistics and Administrative Support:
- Coordinate catering and printing needs for NAL programs.
- Assist with data entry for participant information collected from events.
- Compile and submit receipts for expense management, providing monthly expense reports.
- Candidate Vetting Support:
- Assist NALAF in the vetting process for potential endorsements, including conducting research and gathering relevant data for candidate profiles.
- Provide a summary report of findings for each candidate vetted.
- Additional Programming Support:
- Provide logistical and administrative support as needed for other NAL/NALAF programming, ensuring timely and organized execution.
Requirements:
- Commit to working 10 hours per week from January through June 2025.
- Attend check-in meetings and provide updates on the progress of deliverables.
- Regularly check and respond to emails and Slack messages.
- Create and maintain spreadsheets to document research and build institutional knowledge.
Preferred Experience/Qualifications:
- Event planning experience, preferably for small-to-medium sized events.
- Ability to research and identify values-aligned venues and hotels.
- Familiarity with tools like EveryAction, Airtable, Google Sheets, Excel formulas, and Concur flight booking software.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
- Familiarity with NAL programming, either as an alum or supporter.
- Knowledge of national, state, and local political landscapes across multiple states.
- Campaign experience as a volunteer or staff member is preferred.

NAL/AF are the only organizations preparing New Americans to enter the political process and govern with accountability and authenticity. As a result, more New Americans will run for office, engage their communities, turn out new voters, and ultimately serve as values-aligned leaders in office who can advance just and equitable policies.
Our programs carry community leaders and activists throughout their political journey, from laying the groundwork with general campaign skills, to advancing governing skills once elected, we empower New Americans to lead with values and vision.
Position Description
NAL/AF is seeking a Political Intern to join our programs team in Fall 2024. The Political Intern is responsible for assisting in planning campaign trainings, conducting electoral research, identifying community leaders to recruit to run for office, and supporting NAL/AF in alumni development.
Educational Opportunities
The internship will research and provide insight into immigrant electoral politics in the United States, as well as the fundamental elements of running a local campaign for public office. Interns will work with NAL/AF’s program staff, and will have opportunities to participate in other aspects of NAL/AF’s work that align with his, her, or their interests.
- Interns will learn about the political and electoral landscape in various states and metro areas with large populations of New Americans.
- Interns will learn about the high level and technical aspects of running a state or local campaign for office.
- Interns will become familiar with New American candidates who are currently running for office.
- Interns will become familiar with New American candidates in the NAL/AF network, and have opportunities to connect with them.
Examples of Tasks
- Identify community leaders around the country.
- Research New American candidates with compelling stories who are breaking barriers and running against the status quo.
- Research voter historical turnout statistics.
- Research campaigns and advocacy fights around democracy reform and immigrant integration.
- Provide ongoing support to the program team including to the Program and Data Coordinator and the Deputy Director of Program Evaluation and Operations.
Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrated interest in immigrant rights, immigration policy, and democracy reform.
- Passionate about improving minority representation in all tiers of U.S. leadership.
- Knowledge of the different levels of government.
- Proficient knowledge of Google Drive, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Interpersonal skills, including the ability to make calls to a wide variety of people, from donors to local representatives.
- Self-starter who takes initiative on individual projects, but also works well in cooperative, decision-making settings.
- Strong organizational/multi-tasking skills, detail oriented, and an ability to meet deadlines on time.
Preferred but Not Required
- Familiarity with NGP VAN, Airtable and EveryAction.
- Prior experience working on a candidate campaign or in the office of an elected official.

While this is an unpaid internship, class credit may be arranged with your college or university. As an intern, you will gain the experience and skills necessary for working in the nonprofit industry. In addition to program coordination, you will also learn about immigrant civic engagement and electoral politics, and you will have an opportunity to participate in other aspects of our work. Interns can also explore planning a campus event highlighting inclusive democracy and NAL/AF’s work.
Time Commitment
A minimum of 15 hours per week is required. Students who can commit to two semesters are strongly preferred. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required during an event. Scheduling is flexible based on applicant’s availability. The majority of internship activities will take place remotely during office hours (9:30am-5:30pm) Monday-Friday.
