New Americans play a pivotal role in shaping our country. We’ve demonstrated our political power at all levels of office, and together with our alumni and people like you, we’ve worked tirelessly to create a democracy that works for, and represents all of us.
But even with these achievements, our communities continue to face significant pushback. Leaders from our network, Nicole Melaku (Ready to Win® 2015) and Gianina Horton (Elected and Appointed Officials Network), spoke to NPR and laid out the very real fears and challenges that New Americans seeking naturalization must face.
“There is an understanding that we’re in a political climate where it is unsafe for a lot of immigrants to engage with federal agencies. Whether that is true or perceived, it is still a huge influential factor,” Horton said.
These hurdles only underscore the need to diversify our political leadership. When our leaders—people like us, people who understand the unique struggles we face—take a stand, we know that we can rely on them to advocate for the humane and inclusive policies that will safeguard and advance our communities.
Now is the time—channel your emotions into action. Whether you’re looking to connect your community to the right resources, or play a part in directly shaping legislation, consider applying to our upcoming Ready to Win® training. (Deadline is tomorrow!) Not only is this a space to connect with other like-minded changemakers from across the country, but it’s an opportunity to hone your skills as a community organizer and truly connect with and mobilize your neighborhood to write the future we deserve.
