This was a day for accountability and a step towards justice. But no ruling can ever give George Floyd his life back or save his family and community the pain and trauma they have endured. Only the complete dismantling of oppressive, racist systems can deliver the justice George Floyd and all other victims of white supremacy deserve.
Today’s guilty ruling does not change the fact that Black communities are overwhelmingly the victims of police brutality and systemic white supremacy. There is still so much work to be done to stop the hate, discrimination, and violence we face and ensure that true justice is done on behalf of our communities.
We need justice for Daunte Wright. Adam Toledo. Ahmaud Arbery. Breonna Taylor. Tamir Rice. Freddie Gray. Amadou Diallo. Sandra Bland. Stephon Clark. Tony McDade. Eric Garner. Botham Jean. For all those who have been the victims of white supremacy.
We will continue to say their names, stand united, and fight tirelessly to create the change our communities deserve. We will not stop until we all have the right to breathe. Our lives depend on it. #BlackLivesMatter
