Earlier today, Trump announced that he would sign an executive order extending his original freeze on green cards and admittance to some foreign workers under the guise of coronavirus concerns.
In response to his announcement, New American Leaders and New American Leaders Action Fund Founder and President Sayu Bhojwani released the following statement:
“Only in Trump’s twisted, white supremacist reality are immigrants a greater threat to public health than a cramped rally of unmasked people during a pandemic. Trump is once again taking a page from the white nationalist playbook to drum up support from his base by using immigrants as scapegoats and freezing vital immigration programs.
“Enough is enough. This has nothing to do with public safety and everything to do with Trump’s obsession with gaining support from his dwindling base. In fact, the biggest threats to public health and safety are Trump, his administration, and their white nationalist agenda. Their gross lack of leadership, planning, and compassion during the coronavirus pandemic have led to the deaths of over 120,000 people and the highest rates of unemployment since the Great Depression. Their decisions have weakened our country while immigrants have worked to heal it as essential workers, volunteers, and public servants.
“Trump and his supporters in office must be stopped. If we want to heal and rebuild our country, then it’s time to elect a new generation of leaders who actually live in reality and understand our communities’ issues. As a movement of New Americans, immigrants, and people of color, we are committed to flexing our growing political power and becoming the leaders our country needs. Our democracy depends on it.”
